Week 12: The Commitment
Phase 3: Movement
George's Story
After I started running experiments and having conversations, opportunities started appearing.
A friend asked if I wanted to consult on his startup's fintech strategy. Another founder asked if I'd be interested in co-founding a new vertical SaaS company. Someone reached out about a VP role at a fintech startup.
Each one sounded interesting. Each one could have been "the thing."
I said no to all of them.
Not because they were bad opportunities. Because they didn't fit.
The consulting was back to the old model — trading time for money in a space I knew was being commoditized.
The co-founding opportunity would have had me building tools again — exactly what AI was eating.
The VP role would have been someone else's vision, not mine.
Saying no was hard. Each "no" felt like I was closing a door. Reducing my options. Being foolish.
But here's what I learned: every "yes" is a "no" to something else.
And I wanted to say "yes" to something that operated in the safe layers. Something I owned. Something that couldn't be commoditized.
The Problem With Optionality
Most people drown in optionality.
Too many paths. Too many ideas. Too many "I should" thoughts. They keep their options open because they're afraid of committing to the wrong thing.
But keeping options open is a choice too. And it's often the wrong one.
Clarity doesn't come from adding options. It comes from closing doors.
The moment I said no to those three opportunities, I felt clearer than I had in months. Not because I knew exactly what I would do. But because I knew what I wouldn't.
