Why I Built This

I spent years telling myself “I'll quit when I hit $X.” Then $X became $X+100K. Then $X+200K.

The number kept moving because I never actually did the math.

When I finally sat down and calculated it—really calculated it—I realized I could have quit a year earlier. That's a year of my life I gave to a company instead of building something of my own.

This calculator forces you to do the math. No vague “I need more runway.” Real numbers. Real dates. Real decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Quitting Your Job

Common questions about calculating when you can afford to leave your job

How much money do I need to quit my job?

It depends on your monthly expenses, emergency fund, and how long you want to go without income. Most people need 12-24 months of runway. This calculator gives you a personalized answer based on your actual numbers.

Should I wait for my RSUs to vest before quitting?

Not always. We calculate the trade-off: how many months of your life are you trading for how many months of additional runway? Sometimes waiting 12 months for RSUs only buys you 3 months of extra runway—a bad deal.

What if my partner is working?

Partner income significantly extends your runway. If their income covers your expenses, you technically have 'infinite runway'—but we also remind you that this puts pressure on one person and isn't risk-free.

What data do I need to use this calculator?

Your liquid savings (cash, stocks you'd sell), monthly expenses, what you could cut expenses to, unvested equity (if any), partner income, and how many months of runway you need to feel safe.

Is my financial data stored or shared?

Your data stays in your browser only. Nothing is sent to a server. We only ask for your email at the end if you want to save your results.

How accurate is the quit date calculation?

It's as accurate as your inputs. We use straightforward math: your available funds divided by your monthly burn rate. No assumptions or projections—just your real numbers.

Can I use this if I'm not in tech?

Absolutely. The math works the same whether you're in tech, finance, healthcare, or any other field. The RSU section is optional if you don't have equity compensation.
